Pre-Doctoral Fellowship in Applied Microeconomics

Position Description    

Professors Mery Ferrando, Teodora Tsankova and Ashley Wong are seeking a pre-doctoral fellow starting in the summer of 2024 (July 1 or another, mutually agreed upon, date). The position is for one year.

The fellow will be sharing their time between research projects in Applied Microeconomics with a focus on labor, gender, and migration. The tasks encompass contributions to all stages of the projects: literature research and reviews, data cleaning, data analysis of (restricted) microdata, administrative and organizational work, and taking part in meetings of the co-author teams.

The fellow will spend 0.9 FTE (36 hours per week) divided between joint and individual projects of the three researchers. In their remaining 0.1 FTE (4 hours), the fellow is encouraged to attend research seminars, can follow one graduate course per semester, and is encouraged to develop their own research agenda. This position is envisioned to prepare candidates for applications to leading Ph.D. programs in Economics.

Location is Tilburg, the Netherlands.

Salary

Salary is EUR 45,022. Applicants from outside the Netherlands (including non-EU residents) can apply for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The University offers generous fringe benefits.

Qualifications  

The desired qualifications are the following:

Strong background in economics or related fields (at least a three or four-year bachelor’s degree in economics or related fields).

  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong programming skills, preferably with statistical software Stata.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement, intermediate Dutch skills are an asset (due to the nature of some of the research projects that use administrative Dutch records), but not required.

After an initial screening, candidates who advance to a second round will be invited to complete a programming test and participate in an online interview. Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis (starting on May 1) until the position is filled.
